How Formula 1 can become a source of media visibility for Formula E. How Formula 1 can become a source of media visibility for Formula E.

2024 F1 race start (Mercedes, Red Bull)

Formula 1 drivers who chose to continue their careers in Formula E have represented a significant opportunity for the electric series, both in sporting and media terms. In the recently concluded season, at least six of them participated in at least one race. Specifically, veterans Jean-Eric Vergne, Sebastian Buemi, and Lucas di Grassi were joined by Stoffel Vandoorne, Nyck de Vries, and Pascal Wehrlein.

The key issue linking electric racing, sports, and new global markets could potentially lead to unexpected surprises. According to recent rumors, Zhou Guanyu, Logan Sargeant, and even Yuki Tsunoda are reportedly of interest to Formula E’s management.

With the energy transition, Asia and the United States have strengthened their positions in the international system. Motorsport competitions, starting with their calendars, cannot ignore this political and economic context.

Ambitions and the Future

Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds addressed these topics, emphasizing the connections between the two championships.

Regarding the Stake F1 Team KICK Sauber driver and his home country, the executive stated in an interview with RacingNews365: “China is an interesting market for us. We’ve also seen how Zhou sparked crowd enthusiasm. He attracted a significant number of spectators in Shanghai, where everyone supported him.”

He added: “Wherever we have major commercial systems, such as China or the United States, I believe having drivers from those countries creates a base of interested viewers. Suddenly, there’s someone to root for. Whether it’s Zhou, Tsunoda in Japan, Sargeant from the U.S., or others, having them in Formula E would be positive.”

Dodds also explained the benefits of arrivals from the Circus, stating: “These drivers bring in new viewers, increasing the audience. This aligns with the ultimate goal of any motorsport series. For us, Formula 1 drivers are attractive. It’s a championship with greater visibility than ours.”

He continued: “So, if they join us, they spark the interest of those who’ve never considered or known Formula E. They might start watching to learn more. I’ll never apologize for bringing more spectators to this sport.”

However, in conclusion, the CEO reaffirmed his confidence in his current grid, saying: “That said, it’s not like we’re hunting down Formula 1 drivers to convince them to come here. Looking at the collective, as I’ve already said, I’d back our twenty-two drivers against any other series in the world, including Formula 1.”
