Jody Scheckter has put up for auction six Formula 1 cars from his private collection: among them is also the Ferrari 312 T4 with which he won the title.

Jody Scheckter sells the Ferrari 312T4
For 21 years, it was a generational icon for Ferrari fans, as it was the last winning model before the golden era signed by Michael Schumacher from 2000 to 2004. This is the Ferrari 312 T4, the car designed by Mauro Forghieri with which Jody Scheckter won the 1979 World Championship: now the South African has put it up for auction.

Jody Scheckter has included 12 cars from his private collection in the RM Sotheby’s auction to be held on May 11. Among them is precisely the 1979 title-winning car: the chassis is #040, successfully raced at Zolder, Monte Carlo, and Monza, the three victories of the world champion in that season. It is estimated to be sold for between 5,250,000 and 6,500,000 euros.

The other cars
The South African will auction not only the 1979 Ferrari but also other Formula 1 cars he raced. They are, to be precise, a McLaren M19A, on which Jody Scheckter made his F1 debut at the 1972 Watkins Glen GP, a McLaren M23 from 1973, a Tyrrell 007 from 1975, a Wolf WR1 from 1977, and a reproduction of the six-wheeled Tyrrell P34.

Also up for auction are two Formula 2 cars (the McLaren M21 from 1972 and the Rondel Motul M1 from 1973), a Formula 3 car (the Merlyn Mk21 from 1971), and other cars from the private collection: the Merlyn Mk11a from 1969, winner of the British Formula Ford championship, the Trojan T101 from 1974, winner of the Formula 5000 title, and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ from 1960, which participated in the 1961 and 1963 editions of the Targa Florio.

Jody Scheckter, former South African driver and world champion with Ferrari in 1979, has expressed disdain for the rule on the maximum limit of replaceable components throughout the Formula One season, which over the years, despite the possibility of changing one additional Power Unit this year, has led to numerous grid penalties, often distorting the starting order.

Jody Scheckter against the component limit rule
“I follow the races, and I must say I enjoy them a lot, even though some rules are really trash,” admitted Jody Scheckter in a recent interview with the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“However, today the world works like this. You can’t do this anymore, and you can’t do that anymore. The penalty system the drivers have is ridiculous. You have an accident, you have to replace the gearbox, and you receive a penalty.”

“But the penalty has already been imposed due to the accident and the gearbox you had to throw away. So why do they also have to make you move back on the starting grid? Besides that, of course, you can have a good or less good race, but it will always be an interesting sport.” – he explained.

The most striking case, from this point of view, was seen in Las Vegas when the blameless Carlos Sainz, after a heavy impact on a manhole cover at over 300 km/h and having torn apart the SF23, was also forced to serve a 10-position grid penalty on Sunday for exceeding the maximum limit of replaceable components.

Even Charles Leclerc, at the beginning of the 2023 Formula One season, incurred penalties in Saudi Arabia for the consequences of retiring towards the end of the Bahrain GP.

Although the F1 Commission allowed teams to replace Power Units four times this year, unlike previous seasons, penalties have continued to accumulate, and one wonders whether granting more freedom in an increasingly restrictive Formula 1 could be a reasonable decision for the future.

After the period of dominance in the turbo-hybrid era, Mercedes started the ground-effect era on the wrong foot. The team led by Mike Elliot introduced a too daring project, without sidepods, which did not pay off. Both the W13 and W14 were difficult machines to understand, being on the front row one day and in third place the next week.

Even former Ferrari world champion Jody Scheckter struggled to understand what happened, and, in a recent interview with the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, he praised Lewis Hamilton’s work. “And thank God for this situation, they used to win so much before… It’s hard to understand what happened. Lewis Hamilton remains strong, but in the past, they had it easy, the car dominated and was superior: in certain Brazilian GPs, for example, he passed everyone and climbed from the back with to the top absurd ease. Now, they are struggling, and we have to see if they will return to the front.” – the former Ferrari driver pointed out.

Last year, Lewis Hamilton had acted as a “guinea pig” to test various setups and profiles, which led him to finish the season well behind George Russell. In 2023, however, the story was different, and the young man from King’s Lynn struggled to keep up with his teammate’s pace. Commenting on the situation, the South African admitted, “I thought George Russell would give him more trouble, but he remained strong as he was in 2021. On speed, I don’t know, over time you gain more experience and maybe lose something. But the seven-time champion is doing a very good job.” – concluded the South African business proprietor and former motor racing driver, who competed in Formula One from 1972 to 1980, winning the Drivers’ Championship in 1979 with Ferrari.

South African business proprietor and former motor racing driver Jody Scheckter, who competed in Formula 1 between 1972 and 1980, winning the Drivers’ Championship in 1979 with Scuderia Ferrari, has provided more details about why South Africa was not able to return to the Formula 1 calendar in the 2023 season.

Three decades have passed since the Kyalami circuit last hosted Formula 1 Grand Prix. However, there were talks regarding a possible return on the Formula 1 calendar in 2023, taking the sport back to Africa after a long time. Former Ferrari boss and current F1 chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali had expressed the sport’s ‘commitment’ to reach an agreement on this matter last year, but eventually the 2023 calendar was confirmed without the presence of Kyalami, which made it clear that negotiation did not reach a positive outcome.

In a recent interview for Total Motorsport, 1979 Formula 1 world champions Jody Scheckter revealed that “I was an inside part of it, my nephew worked on it for six years. It was that close. The guy from Kyalami went from 500,000 to 2 million, and he wanted to take the whole thing over. Formula 1 came over to sign. He had got government backing, some of the wealthiest people in South Africa behind it. Everything was in place, and the guy from Kyalami got greedy. Just as soon as F1 left, he changed the whole thing completely. The government realised there was a fight [going on] and withdrew, and that was the end. Maybe it’ll happen back here again. I don’t know.” – the former Ferrari driver explained.

“My nephew had been working on it for six years, nearly full-time. Because going [through the] government and getting [their support] and for them all to agree to put some budget in and then to secure the money. It takes a massive amount [of effort]. All of a sudden, it was over, and he was left with nothing.” – a disappointed Jody Scheckter concluded.

Everyday misfortunes can affect even established champions. Thus, on Twitter, the story of an incident that happened to a Formula 1 legend of the past is becoming viral: that of South African Jody Scheckter. The Formula 1 World champion, who in 1979 had a magical season for the colors of Scuderia Ferrari, shared an unfortunate episode on Twitter, also asking for help from fans and users of the popular social network. Jody Scheckter, who until the memorable title won by Michael Schumacher in 2000 was for a long time the last driver to win an F1 world title at the wheel of a Ferrari, wrote in a message on Twitter that he had lost his wallet in London.

“Afternoon, I lost my wallet last night in Central West London, a simple black leather wallet with my IDs & cards in it. Had it for a long time so offering a £1,000 reward for anyone who finds it and can return it. Any help appreciated. Please RT for visibility. DMs open. Likely around the C London restaurant, though they don’t have it unfortunately.” – Jody Scheckter posted on Twitter, as the former Scuderia Ferrari driver also asked users to retweet his message to help him and, should they have information, write him a private message. On 13th May 1979, the Belgian Grand Prix was held at Zolder. As had been the case for much of the season to date, Ligier was the dominant team in qualifying, monopolising the front row, with Jacques Laffite on pole ahead of Patrick Depailler by just 7 hundredths. The Ferraris were quite a way back, with Gilles Villeneuve sixth ahead of Jody Scheckter in the other 312 T4.

At the start, Depailler went into the lead ahead of Alan Jones in the Williams and Nelson Piquet in the Brabham, while Laffite had a poor getaway. On lap 2, Ferrari’s race seemed to be run. Scheckter collided with Clay Regazzoni’s Williams which in turn was hit by Villeneuve. Fortunately, the South Africa Prancing Horse driver managed to keep going without any problems, while Regazzoni was out and Gilles had to pit for repairs.

Scheckter managed to pass Mario Andretti in the Lotus and began a great climb up the order. Jones retired shortly after, while Depailler lost control of his car and ended up in the barriers. So, by lap 54 of 70, Laffite led from Scheckter, Carlos Reutemann in the Lotus and Didier Pironi in the Tyrrell. The Ferrari gradually closed on the Ligier and eventually got past. It was win number 78 for the Scuderia and the South African’s first win with the Maranello marque, his eighth overall. More importantly, this result saw Scheckter move into the lead of the championship, joint equal with Laffite on 24 points.

By the end of the year, Jody would take the title crown.

On 21st January 1979, the Argentinian Grand Prix took place in Buenos Aires, as the first round of that year’s Formula 1 World Championship. Scuderia Ferrari arrived with the previous year’s car, the 312 T3, given that the new one, the T4, had only been revealed to the press by Enzo Ferrari a few days earlier. However, there was one important new element in the team, as South Africa’s Jody Scheckter joined Gilles Villeneuve in the driver line-up, having moved from Wolf-Ford.

It was a less than sparkling debut. Fifth in qualifying 1”3 off Lafitte’s pole in the Ligier, Jody Scheckter was involved in a huge pile-up at the start (the huge crash at the second of the very fast esses after the pit straight that took off a number of drivers, including Jody Scheckter, Nelson Piquet, John Watson, Patrick Tambay and Mario Andretti). The race was stopped, but the Ferrari man didn’t make the restart because of a dislocated wrist. Gilles Villeneuve started tenth but the degradation of the Michelin tyres meant he was not competitive and then the engine broke, forcing him to retire with five laps to go. The race was won by Jacques Laffitte, ahead of former Ferrari driver Carlos Reutemann (who charged through the field up from 6th to 2nd) and John Watson (McLaren-Ford).

The 1979 Monaco Grand Prix was held in the Principality on 27th May. On the difficult track running through the streets of Monte Carlo, Ferrari had the upper hand, with car developments seeing it move ahead of early season pacesetter Ligier in terms of outright pace. On pole was South Africa’s Jody Scheckter, who was just 7 hundredths ahead of team-mate, Gilles Villeneuve. The others were a long way back, starting with Patrick Depailler (Ligier) and Niki Lauda (Brabham) at 66 and 76 hundredths respectively.

File:Jody Scheckter 1979 Monaco.jpg - Wikimedia Commons

Jody Scheckter got away best at the start, being first through Ste. Devote in his 312 T4. Villeneuve did less well and was passed by Lauda. However, the Canadian put a lie to the idea you can’t overtake in Monaco, by retaking the position on lap 3 before setting off in pursuit of his team-mate.

The race ran on with no particular dramas until lap 54, when Villeneuve’s race ended after his transmission failed. At this point, it looked as though Scheckter was heading for victory and so it turned out. But in the closing stages, Clay Regazzoni in the Williams made up nearly all the ground that separated him from the Ferrari so that Jody beat Clay by just 44 hundredths. Third was another former Maranello driver, Carlos Reutemann in the Lotus.
