Home » Thailand also aims for its Formula 1 GP: letter of intent underway, target 2027

Thailand also aims for its Formula 1 GP: letter of intent underway, target 2027. Thailand is also preparing to submit a letter of intent to host Formula 1 starting in 2027.

Just days after Rwanda’s official bid to organize an F1 Grand Prix in the near future, another candidacy emerges. Thailand is now closer to presenting its letter of intent to bring Formula 1 to the country starting in 2027.

Thailand is no stranger to the world of motorsport, as MotoGP has been held in Buriram (FIA Grade 1) for several years. However, hosting F1 would mark a new chapter. Initial discussions with the Southeast Asian nation date back to the Imola Grand Prix, where Stefano Domenicali and the Thai Prime Minister were spotted in the paddock.

According to Issara, a local news agency, a meeting was held to start drafting the project. One of the key topics was the choice of location for the new circuit. Several areas are under consideration: U-Tapao Airport, the Eastern Aviation City development area in Rayong province, Ratchadamnoen Road, Chatuchak, and the area around Bangkok’s railway station.

Particular attention has been given to Chatuchak, where a 5.6 km circuit is proposed. This idea has been discussed with relevant agencies, including public transportation authorities and other entities.

The first stage of the project involves presenting the circuit design, after which the FIA will send delegates to assess the proposal’s feasibility. If approved by the federation, the Thai government will submit a formal expression of interest to host Formula 1 in January 2025. This ambitious project will also involve local universities to conduct a feasibility study in preparation for the inaugural race, with the goal set for 2027.
