Pirelli displeased with how F1 tires are reused: “Real target is another”. What becomes of the Formula 1 tires used on the track?.

Formula 1 enthusiasts and insiders often show interest only in the weekend sessions, with the most popular being qualifying and the race. However, what happens behind the scenes? What becomes of the tires used on the track?

Some might think they could be collected by fans attending the Grand Prix or put up for sale to some affluent collector, but, unfortunately, none of that happens.

The reason Pirelli doesn’t allow any of this was expressed by Mario Isola, the motorsport director of the Italian-Chinese company, in an interview with ‘Motorsport-Total.com’: “Using ‘secret materials’ for the manufacture of our tires, we don’t want to give away our intellectual property. That’s why we collect all sets made available to the drivers at the end of all Formula 1, Formula 2, and Formula 3 sessions.” – he pointed out.

Burned Tires to Generate Energy
The fate of the tires, however, is quite different. In fact, as the Italian manager explains, the tires are then taken to Pirelli’s technical center in the UK, where they are “used to generate energy within our factories. The tires are burned at very high temperatures to minimize emissions and only extract energy.” – he explained.

The Real Target is Another
However, Pirelli is not satisfied with how it is reusing its products. This recycling is only a temporary solution in the plans of the well-known manufacturer, which sees burning its products as an incredible waste: “We are looking for other methods for the future. In reality, we would like to reuse the materials from old compounds in the construction of road tires.”
