Ferrari boss pinpoints fine line that separated success from disaster this year. Fred Vasseur details F1 2023's fine line between success and 'disaster'.

Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has elaborated on the delicate balance that separated triumph from “disaster” during the 2023 Formula 1 championship which has recently concluded.

In the pursuit behind Red Bull, the competitive midfield featured tight competition, with Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, and Aston Martin all contending for the best-of-the-rest position in each Grand Prix weekend.

The substantial upgrade packages and the varying development pace among teams led to significant performance fluctuations. Ferrari faced challenges with its SF-23 in the early season but managed a turnaround after the summer break, transforming into a formidable contender in qualifying. Notably, Carlos Sainz secured a victory at the Marina Bay street circuit in Singapore.

While Ferrari fell short of overtaking Mercedes for the second position, Fred Vasseur emphasized the impact of a suboptimal setup or track conditions on a team’s performance during a given weekend and depending the several factors:

“We had different momentum during the season” – the French manager explained in a recent interview for the International media, when asked to look back on Ferrari’s 2023 Formula 1 campaign – “It is true that Carlos was very, very strong after the summer break, and Charles was flying in the last six or seven events, but I think overall the evolution that we had in the team was a good one. We don’t have to keep in mind races like [Abu Dhabi] for Carlos, he won in Singapore, was on pole in Monza. All throughout the season, it was true that for every single team, except Max, everybody has been down during the season, and it’s been very tight. Sometimes, because you like the track or your set-up of the car likes the track, you can move from Row 3 to P10 and it is a disaster, but it means we have to stick to our approach.” – Scuderia Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur concluded.
