“Seb Vettel!”, Lando Norris’ comment in Canadian GP cooldown room that didn’t sit well with fans. Lando Norris made a comparison between Sergio Perez and Sebastian Vettel.

Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc

Fans were displeased that Lando Norris mentioned Sebastian Vettel in the cooldown room at the end of the Canadian Grand Prix after observing Sergio Perez’s mistake. However, the McLaren driver’s “joke” might have been misinterpreted.

The incident began with the highlights of the race shown to the top three finishers in the cooldown room. Sergio Perez’s crash on lap 53 appeared on the screen. The Mexican lost control of his RB20 in turn 6, spinning into the barriers. The impact severely damaged the rear wing of his Red Bull, forcing him to retire.

Watching the replay, Lando Norris exclaimed “Seb Vettel!” as he saw the Mexican lose control and spin. Fans interpreted this comment as mocking the German driver. A “meme” had emerged with Sebastian Vettel in late 2018 and early 2019 due to his frequent spins in his Ferrari.

A dig at Sebastian Vettel or a reference to Canada 2011?
Of course, we can’t know what the McLaren driver was thinking, but it’s also plausible that it wasn’t a jab at the former Ferrari driver.

It’s possible that Lando Norris was referring to the 2011 Canadian GP when the German driver made a mistake in turn 6 on the last lap, gifting the victory to Jenson Button.

The dynamics were similar to Sergio Perez’s incident. The German didn’t spin but still lost control of his Red Bull. Jenson Button took advantage of Sebastian Vettel’s error to take the lead in one of the most incredible races in F1 history. However, most fans took Lando Norris’ words as a jab at Sebastian Vettel. This led to many social media messages asking the English driver to show respect for the four-time world champion.

Lando Norris’ comment was probably simply misinterpreted. We’ll see if the English driver decides to clarify the situation personally.
