Adrian Newey reveals why he turned down Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton before joining Aston Martin. Adrian Newey addresses Ferrari interest ahead of Aston Martin move.

Adrian Newey, Ferrari

British engineer Adrian Newey described his decision to join Aston Martin as a “clear and natural choice,” despite receiving interest from several Formula 1 teams, including Scuderia Ferrari.

On Tuesday, the renowned Formula 1 car designer was officially introduced at Aston Martin’s new Silverstone headquarters, speaking to media outlets. The former Red Bull team member will take on the role of managing partner, overseeing the team’s technical operations starting in March.

Though Aston Martin had long been viewed as the frontrunner to secure Adrian Newey, Scuderia Ferrari had initially been favored, having made multiple attempts over the years to lure him away from Red Bull. Even Lewis Hamilton, who will be racing for the Italian side starting with the 2025 Formula 1 campaign, made a public plea for Adrian Newey to join him, while other teams also expressed interest in the 65-year-old’s services.

At his unveiling earlier today, however, the British engineer made it clear that Aston Martin was the only team that truly captured his interest: “I was very flattered by the number of teams that did approach me. I had discussions with some of those teams – not all of them – but in the end it became a very clear and natural choice.” – the legendary car designer explained.

At 65, with an illustrious career that includes 25 titles between drivers’ and constructors’ championships, Adrian Newey has little left to prove in Formula 1. Retirement seemed a genuine possibility when news broke of his upcoming departure from Red Bull.

When asked about the prospect of stepping away from the sport, Newey revealed that the decision was one he made in close consultation with his wife, Amanda. He shared how they came to a mutual agreement on his next steps, pointing out that “I decided to stop at Red Bull, which was really over the Suzuka weekend back in April. Then, genuinely I had no idea what would be next. I just wanted to have a blank mind, kind of take stock, enjoy this for a break, and was hoping that standing in the shower somewhere the spark would come that this should be the direction. Mandy was a big part of that as well, in our discussions and what should we do. I think she was worried that I’d probably drive her a bit mad if I was at home too much.” – he added.

Adrian Newey is set to receive a guaranteed salary of £20 million annually, with performance-based bonuses potentially boosting his earnings to nearly £30 million per year. While it’s an enormous contract for a car designer, Aston Martin’s billionaire owner, Lawrence Stroll, didn’t hesitate, confidently backing the investment and stating: “I can tell you, Adrian is a bargain. I’ve been in business for over 40 years now, and I’ve never been more certain. It’s not an investment – he’s a shareholder and a partner, so it’s the best partner you can bring into a company. We intend to be around here a very long time together, so it’s relatively inexpensive for everything Adrian brings to the partnership we work on.” – he concluded.

Fred, let’s see if your decision to not hire Newey was the right choice. You r putting your
Credibility ,your reputation, your career on Ferrari doing well and succeeding with Newey. Best
Metaphor I can describe as to your decision is like playing Russian roulette. I hope u r right, because If u r wrong and aston Martin in two to three years from now is beating us, then you elkann, and vigna (aka) mr japanese proverbs, should do the honourable thing and fall on your swords.

Because you collectively will have destroyed and trashed ferrari f1 beyond anything i will ever be able to comprehend. The stakes are big Fred and failure is a dirty word. In my opinion as i see it now, a lack of foresight and purely a dumb and stupid decision, putting your egos and interest ahead of ferrari f1. let the cards fall as they may, let’s just pray they fall your way and if they don’t f..k off.

That is the problem Ferrari has been having for a while… Team boss failures and bad decisions are too common and everyday life for Ferrari.
So if Fred fails, nothing new or unseen will happen, instead he will be replaced with another one and so on!
