Twenty-three races scheduled, but not the South African Grand Prix: today the first draft of the 2022 Formula 1 calendar emerged, which should have a record number of 23 races, a target that Formula 1 did not manage to reach this season due to travel restriction put in place by several countries. Liberty Media has never made any secret of dreaming to bring the sport back to South Africa, a project that also thrilled drivers when the first rumors related to a possible return of Formula 1 to Africa emerged.
Kyalami, a track that has already hosted the South African Grand Prix on 21 occasions in the past, is in pole position for a possible return to the calendar. This is because the costs of a city race in Cape Town or Durban according to the number one of the SAGP – South African Grand Prix – Warren Scheckter, would be much more expensive than the modernization work that the Kyalami track needs in order to be able to host a Formula 1 race again. As reported today by Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Kyalami could reserve other surprises in the future in terms of breathtaking ‘gradients’ after the Zandvoort experience from the Dutch Grand Prix this year. We will see if these prospects materialize for 2023.
