Netflix and Formula 1 have officially confirmed that the highly popular series, Formula 1: Drive To Survive has been renewed for a fifth and sixth season on Netflix.
Filming for the fifth season, which will be released next year, is already underway. The announcement marks the first time Formula 1 has confirmed multiple seasons of the production, which airs on Netflix.
Drive to Survive debuted three years ago (covering the 2018 season, with 10 episodes per series focusing on teams and drivers) and has been credited with increasing Formula 1’s popularity, especially in the United States. The new deal has been announced with just a few days until the first edition of the Miami Grand Prix, one of two races that are scheduled to take place in the USA this year, as a third race will be introduced starting with the 2023 Formula One championship, the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
The fourth season of Drive to Survive, which launched earlier this year, attracted its biggest audience to date, according to the stats presented by Formula 1. It ranked among Netflix’s top 10 most-viewed programmes in 56 different countries.
However reaction to the series among drivers has not been completely positive. World champion Max Verstappen has refused to take part in it, accusing the programme makers of “faking a few rivalries that didn’t exist”. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has admitted he wants to encourage drivers to be involved in the upcoming series.
