Two years have passed since Scuderia Ferrari managed to score its last Formula 1 victory: on 22 September 2019, Sebastian Vettel won the Singapore Grand Prix, which up to date remains his last win, as well as the Maranello team’s last victory.
One-longest drought for Ferrari
Between 1990 and 1994, Scuderia Ferrari went 59 races without a win (now 37 Grands Prix have passed since the Italian side last celebrated on top of the podium). In Ferrari’s long history, there were only a few seasons when no Grand Prix victory was achieved: in recent history, this was only the case in 2014, 2016 and last year. This season, Ferrari finished on the podium three times with Carlos Sainz’s second place in Monaco as the best result.
Former Ferrari-driver Gerhard Berger thinks that the negative record of 59 races might be broken. In a recent interview for Speedweek.com the Austrian explains why he is convinced of this. “I think Ferrari has fallen back into the wishful thinking that they want to win the championship with Italians. I can’t understand that, because success comes to Italy anyway because Ferrari is an Italian team. For a successful team, you have to bring in the best people and you have to do it globally.” – he explained.
Schumacher era was incredible
To explains his statements, Gerhard Berger refers to the Michael Schumacher era at Ferrari. Schumacher joined the Maranello team back in 1996 and won the world title five times from 2000 to 2004. “That time was incredible. But there was also a good team with Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, Rory Byrne and Michael Schumacher.”
However, Gerhard Berger remains positive about the future of the Italian team: “In my time we also went through lean periods. You can only move forward by working hard over the years.” Currently, Scuderia Ferrari is fourth in the Formula One world championship, ahead of the 2021 Russian Grand Prix at Sochi Autodrom.
