Gerhard Berger looks ahead to ‘crucial’ 2022 Formula 1 season for Ferrari. Gerhard Berger talks about Ferrari's prospects for 2022.

For Scuderia Ferrari, the 2021 Formula 1 season was a first step in the right direction. After a nightmare 2020, the Prancing Horse managed to raise its head in the World Championship that ended a few weeks ago. There were no victories – the latest win remains the one scored by Sebastian Vettel in Singapore back in 2019 – but five podiums and above all third place in the constructors’ classification, pointed to some encouraging signs of progress by achieving the realistic goal set by team principal Mattia Binotto at the beginning of the 2021 season.

For next year, however, the fans are expecting more. The expectations are high as we wait for the new sporting and technical regulations and what made them increase even more were some statements from the Ferrari top management, who aspire to become protagonists once again. Between saying and doing, in this case, however, there is the need to create a competitive single-seater for 2022.

Interviewed by Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, former Scuderia Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger, who knows well about the difficulties that can be experienced wearing the red suit in periods with poor results, tried to draw up a balance sheet of the championship that just ended, also making some predictions for the new year: “Let me say that Ferrari’s 2021 season has been good, but not good enough. And it was not a situation that has to do with the drivers – said the Austrian, a great supporter of the qualities of the Charles Leclerc – Carlos Sainz duo – because both, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, are able to win races and also championships” – he explained.

“Now, however, the ambition must be very clear” – the former red #28 said – “Ferrari wants to win races and have its role in the battle for the world title. And it has to be like this: next year will be crucial in this sense for the Scuderia and for its fans all over the world. I think that winning some races will be possible. I think the necessary developments are underway, although obviously I don’t know how things are going, and that’s why it’s hard to say whether Ferrari will win the championship. I agree with Mattia Binotto when he says that winning the world championship should not be seen as an obligation. But what I can say is: let’s hope for next year!” – Gerhard Berger concluded.
