Scuderia Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has revealed that the Italian side has re-evaluated the ideal developmental philosophy for the SF-23 car due to the poor start of the 2023 Formula One championship.
The Maranello team started the previous campaign in a strong way and was able to challenge Red Bull and Max Verstappen for the first half of the 2022 championship, with Charles Leclerc who was expected to fight for the title against the Dutchman up to the very end.
However, a series of operational issues, poor strategy calls from the Maranello pit wall and lack of power unit reliability meant Scuderia Ferrari’s title hopes gradually fell apart. As a result, Ferrari decided to focus on the 2023 campaign as early as last summer, hoping to mount a title challenge against Red Bull.
Yet tyre degradation problem and other technical failures affected the SF-23 single-seater in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia, the first three rounds of the championship, which has led to a general lack of competitiveness that did not allow Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to secure even one podium finish in this start of the season. The Italian side is now having to settle for a P2 battle against Aston Martin and Mercedes.
Taking into consideration the problems that have been clearly seen in the first races of 2023, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur, who was appointed at the top of the Formula 1 Racing Division in January, replacing Mattia Binotto, was asked if the Italian side has been able to at least understood its issues and what caused them:

“Honestly, I [don’t] even think Red Bull can say that they have everything under control, it’s the DNA of our business,” Frederic Vasseur said in a recent discussion with the media – “You have to do a better job in every single race and to understand more and to extract more of the potential of the car. For sure, we have adjusted, a little bit, the direction of the development over the last few weeks, but it’s true for everybody on the grid.” – the French manager concluded.
