Pirelli unveiled “Typhoon” today, the trophy that will be presented to the first three drivers to cross the finish line of the 2023 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, which will take place this weekend at the Monza International Circuit.

The trophy, although it’s more appropriate to call it a work of art, as it’s the result of the work of the Italian artist Ruth Beraha, is inspired by the shape of a Formula 1 car’s exhaust pipe, as well as Greek mythology. The name is derived from a mythological figure, a giant son of Gaia, characterized by extraordinary strength and 100 snakes on its head.

The trophy was commissioned by Pirelli and the Pirelli HangarBicocca contemporary art museum, but it stands out as a work of art created with sophisticated methods. This includes 3D design and cutting, as well as the expertise of artisans specialized in welding, polishing, assembly, and gilding.

“When I started studying Formula 1, I immediately realized that technology is a fundamental part of this sport,” commented Ruth Beraha – “I wanted to pay homage to it, so I looked for a visual element within the car to start from. I identified the collectors, which have an extremely organic shape. From the tubes of the exhaust system, I then imagined the snakes. The trophy is like a tamed creature when the race winner holds it in their hand, but it remains potentially menacing and capable of putting everything back into play.”

Therefore, Pirelli has commissioned a trophy from an artist for the third consecutive year. It happened in 2021, with the artist Alice Ronchi designing the trophies for the Made in Italy and Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola. It also happened last year for the 2022 Italian Grand Prix: on that occasion, the trophies were created by Patrick Tuttofuoco.

“Typhoon” will be presented during the Pirelli Tyres Talk, a press event that will take place in the Pirelli Hot Laps garage (in boxes 7 and 8) during the first free practice session of the Formula 1 Grand Prix on Friday, September 1st, from 13:30 to 14:30.

The event will be attended by the artist who created the trophies and Enrico Gualtieri, Director of the Power Unit Area of Scuderia Ferrari.
