Christian Horner has no illusions amid Red Bull Power Unit: “Ferrari has 75 years of experience and Mercedes 30”. A colossal challenge for Red Bull amid power units.

Red Bull Powertrains
Red Bull Racing, one of the most successful teams in recent Formula 1 history, has announced a significant strategic shift with its decision to produce its own power units starting in 2026. This move, made possible by the creation of the Red Bull Powertrains division, represents an ambitious step toward technological independence in an era of significant regulatory changes in motorsport.

With the introduction of new technical regulations focused on greater sustainability, including the use of synthetic fuels and an increased emphasis on energy efficiency, Red Bull aims to solidify its position as a key player in Formula 1. The team seeks to reduce its reliance on external suppliers and strengthen the link between innovation and on-track performance.

A colossal challenge
Team principal Christian Horner addressed the topic of Red Bull engines during an interview with PlanetF1: “There is a very exciting chapter ahead with Red Bull Powertrains: it is the biggest challenge we’ve faced in our 20 years in Formula 1 and potentially one of the most thrilling.”

Christian Horner, however, is well aware of the difficulties the team will encounter and does not want to create false expectations: “2026 will be a complete reset, and just four years ago, we started from a blank sheet to produce our power unit. In these four years, we’ve built a factory and developed an engine, but we are under no illusions: Ferrari has 75 years of experience, and Mercedes has 30 with HPP. The mountain we have to climb is immense, but with the right spirit and the right people, it will be achievable.” – the Red Bull team principal concluded.
